Department of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Paediatrics

Our History

The IMC's Department of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Paediatrics was launched in 1952. Its greatest achievements are:

  • In 1964 the Clinic initiated Poland's first countrywide screening for phenylketonuria and introduced its treatment;

  • Countrywide introduction of diagnostics and treatment of Galactosaemia and Hyperphenylalaninemia;

  • Crucial research and treatment contribution in the area of inherited diseases – inborn errors of metabolism and cystic fibrosis, which translated into new treatment and rehabilitation methods of cystic fibrosis, which resulted in extended length of life among patients from xx to xx;

  • Developing methods of prevention and treatment of multiple types of kidney stone disease.

Our Services

The clinic conducts research and provides treatment in:

  • Inborn errors of metabolism,

  • Cystic fibrosis,

  • Chronic diseases of respiratory tract,

  • Kidney stone disease linked to the metabolic syndrome

  • Gastroenterology with particular focus on dietary intolerances and allergies as well as eating disorders.

The IMC Paediatric Clinic is a certified to grant specialisation in paediatric medicine and pulmonology.

Services: inpatient treatment of children aged 0–18, particularly patients with the following:

  • Phenylketonuria – Poland's largest and oldest treatment centre (over 40 years), referral clinic for diagnosis of hyperphenylalaninemia and treatment of non-standard forms of phenylketonuria,

  • Galactosaemia – referral clinic for comprehensive diagnostics and treatment,

  • Diagnostics of rare metabolism defects on the basis of MS/MS screening tests of newborns,

  • Hyperlipidaemia and other arteriosclerosis risk factors,

  • Cystic fibrosis (CF) – centre for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment established 40 years ago, the clinic provides treatment to the largest number of CF patients registered in Poland,

  • Chronic lung diseases, congenital malformations of the respiratory system,

  • Stone disease and defects of urinary tract,

  • Somatic development disorders.
